Do you subscribe to any subscription boxes? If you’re not familiar with the idea, I'll tell you what they're all about. There are boxes for all kinds of interests. Subscription boxes can be a great way to sample products you've never tried before. Do you love vegan snacks? There's subscription boxes for that! Do you like trying new cruelty-free makeup and personal care products? There’s a box for that! Want to spoil your pet every month? There’s boxes for that too! You subscribe to the box of your choice and the company sends you a curated box of products on a regular schedule. Some boxes go out monthly, some bi-monthly, and some quarterly.

I’m a regular subscriber to the Dollar Shave Club (new replacement blades for your razor, monthly or bi-monthly.) I’ve also subscribed to BarkBox in the past (a box with a selection of dog toys, treats, and chews for your pup each month.)

I’ve always liked the idea of subscription boxes but I’ve never tried any that excited me.

Through blogging I’ve been able to sample a few different vegan snack subscription boxes but I’ve always found them underwhelming. They always seem to be the same: dried fruits, energy bars, and lackluster snacks. Not very exciting and not worth the money. (PS: If you have subscribe to any vegan food boxes that “wow” you every month, I’d LOVE to hear about them!!)

The subscription boxes that interest me most are the vegan beauty and makeup boxes. I love trying new vegan skincare, makeup, and personal care items.

I wasn’t sure which company I wanted to subscribe to so I decided to try a few. I'm signing up for different vegan makeup/personal care boxes for 3 months each.

To start with I wanted to sample Petit Vour. Petit Vour is a subscription box that helps you discover luxury cruelty-free and vegan makeup and skincare. Petit Vour offers many levels of personalization. You begin by filling out your beauty profile. You'll answer questions about your style, your skin and hair type, and your fragrance preferences. They offer different options for your expectations of vegan and cruelty-free products too. Do you expect products that are all-natural? Or maybe you don't care, as long as the items are vegan. Whatever you like, Petit Vour has something for you!

Petit Vour also has a rewards points system. Every month you can review the products you received to receive up to 400 Petit Vour points ($4.00) which you can spend on Petit Vour products.

For my subscription I was willing to sample anything, as long as it's vegan. I was curious to see if Petit Vour would introduce me to products I'd want to buy again. And of course, I wanted to know if I thought the subscription was worth the price.

For each box I’ll tell you how many products I received, how many products were full-size or trial sized, and whether or not I’d buy any of these products myself.

Let’s get to the boxes! Here’s what I received throughout the 3 months I subscribed to Petit Vour!

A selection of products from the May 2018 Petit Vour box.

The May Box:

# of products received: 5
Full size products received: ⅗
Trial size products received: ⅖
Items I would buy again: 0/5
# of products I loved sampling: ⅘
# of products I’d buy if I had the budget: ⅖

Zabana Essentials Banana Colloidal Oatmeal Mask:

No longer available from Petit Vour - $24.95 for 2 FL OZ / 56 Grams from Zabana Essentials

Would I buy again? No
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes!
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? Maybe!
Additional comments:
This “mask” made my skin feel great. My skin was so soft and smooth. I loved the gentle exfoliation. Unfortunately this mask is so messy, it gets everywhere! It wasn’t the kind of mask you can apply and then do as you please. This mask did inspire me to try making my own mask using oat flour, clay, and a facial oil which offered similar results.

EiR NYC Sunset Oil:

$35.00 for 8 OZ

Would I buy again? No
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? Unlikely

A selection of products from the May 2018 Petit Vour box.

Au Naturale Color Theory Creme Corrector in Sweet Basil:

$24.00 for 0.14G / 4 Grams

Would I buy again? No
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes!
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? No, if I were looking for a colour correcting product for redness I wouldn’t choose this one.
Additional comments:
The “Sweet Basil” colour corrector is more blue than green. So while it helps combat redness, a true green corrector would work so much better.

Lauren B. Beauty Reparative Cuticle Oil Treatment:

$22.00 for 0.34 FL OZ / 10 ML

Would I buy again? No
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes! It came at just the right time when I needed to rescue my cuticles and it really did help.
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? No. I’d probably opt for a more affordable oil.

Everyday Minerals Velvet Eyeshadow in Fresh Glowing:

$7.00 for 0.03 OZ / 0.85 Grams

Would I buy again? Unlikely, but possibly in a different shade.
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? Maybe!
Additional comments:
I wasn’t a huge fan of this shade because it’s SO light not particularly reflective. I liked the formula though so I think I’d enjoy a different shade more.

A selection of products from the June 2018 Petit Vour box.

The June Box:

# of products received: 5
Full size products received: ⅕
Trial size products received: ⅘
Items I would buy again: ⅕
# of products I loved sampling: ⅗
# of products I’d buy if I had the budget: ⅖

Juice Beauty Green Apple Cleansing Bar:

$12.00 for 4.8 OZ

Would I buy again? No.
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes.
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? No! I’d be more likely to opt for Lush bar soaps.

Clove + Hallow Lip Glaze in Candied Hearts:

$15.00

Would I buy again? Unlikely and certainly not in this shade.
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yep!
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? Unlikely.
Additional comments:
I wasn’t a big fan of the formula, applicator, or colour.

A selection of products from the June 2018 Petit Vour box.

Vert Mont Perfumery Cyrena Perfume Oil:

$5.00 for 1.75ML sample | $35.00 for 10ML

Would I buy again? Yes!
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes!
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? Yes!
Additional comments:
I love this scent! It’s unique and I’d love to buy it in full-size. It’s a nice deep blend that’s both smoky and sweet.

MUN Anarose Hydrating Rose Toner:

$7.00 for 10ML | $65.00 for 100ML

Would I buy again? No
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes!
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? No! I don’t think I could justify this price regardless of my budget!

Goldfaden MD Facial Detox | Purifying Mask

$65.00 for 1.7 FL OZ/50ML

Would I buy again? No.
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes!
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? No.
Additional comments:
I actually really really enjoyed this product. I loved it but I can’t see myself spending $65.00 on a single face mask regardless of my budget! It was really calming. I liked using it as a mask and as a spot treatment for breakouts.

A selection of products from the July 2018 Petit Vour box.

The July Box

# of products received: 4
Full size products received: 0/4
Trial size products received: 4/4
Items I would buy again: 0/4
# of products I enjoyed sampling: 4/4
# of products I’d buy if I had the budget: 0/4

Ursa Major 4-in-1 Essential Face Wipes:

$7.00 for 5 | $24.00 for 20

Would I buy again? Unlikely, but I haven’t tried them yet!
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Unsure at this point, I’m saving these for travel.
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? Nah, I’m happy with ELF or Wet n’ Wild makeup removing wipes.

Lilah B. Divine Duo Lip & Cheek:

$46.00

Would I buy again? Unsure at this point, I’m saving these for travel.
Did I enjoy sampling this product? I’m sure I will but I haven’t tried them yet.
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? At this price? That’s very unlikely!

A selection of products from the July 2018 Petit Vour box.

Osea Essential Hydrating Oil:

$32.00 for 0.34 FL OZ

Would I buy again? No.
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes!
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? Probably not, there’s a lot of great hydrating oils I could buy with $32.00!

Little Barn Apothecary Aloe + Rosewater Balance Mist:

$16.00 for 2 FL OZ./60 ml | $32.00 for 4 FL OZ./180ml

Would I buy again? No.
Did I enjoy sampling this product? Yes! I really enjoyed using this mist after cleansing and before applying serums, acids, moisturizers, and oils.
Would I buy this product if I had the budget? Again, unlikely… I just don’t see myself spending $32.00 on any facial mist.

A selection of products from 3 Petit Vour boxes.

Overall stats and review for 3 months of Petit Vour:

Cost:
(Prices in USD (includes shipping)
USA: $18.00/month or $180.00/year
Canada: $23.00/month or $240.00/year (I was charged about $30 -$32 CAD per box)
Worldwide: $25.00/month or $264.00/year

# of products received: 14
Full size products received: 4/14
Trial size products received: 10/14
Items I would buy again: 1/14
Products I loved sampling (I’d buy them again if I had the budget): 11/14
Did Petit Vour introduce to me to new products that I’d actually buy? Not really, no.
Did I enjoy trying new cruelty-free vegan products at this price? I did!

Do I think a subscription to Petit Vour is worth it? It depends! I enjoyed sampling luxury vegan products but I'm not likely to actually buy any luxury vegan products. I would have liked to see more full-size products in the boxes. If you're located in the US and interested in trying Petit Vour I'd probably try it (if it's in your budget!) Outside of the US, it gets quite a bit more expensive. At $30-$32 CAD per box I felt it was a quite expensive, especially for boxes where I didn't end up loving every product.

Happy September! Today’s recipe is exactly what we’ll be craving as we approach chilly evenings and busier weeknights. A quick, simple, hearty and satisfying stew. This Instant Pot Tofu & Potato Stew is ready in 1 hour or less and made with simple ingredients. This is my first Instant Pot recipe (and my first time using an Instant Pot or pressure cooker at all) and I’m hooked!

Two bowls of Instant Pot Vegan Tofu & Little Potato Stew served with French bread on a marble countertop.

In this recipe we’re using Fingerlings from The Little Potato Company, who exclusively grow Creamer potatoes.. Have you ever pressure cooked Little Potatoes? I already love Creamer potatoes' naturally creamy texture and pressure cooking them makes 'em downright velvety. The convenience of the Instant Pot is taken to another level with Little Potatoes. Thanks to their thin skin, there’s no peeling or washing required (they come pre-washed!) I’m going to be trying a lot of recipes with Creamer potatoes in my Instant Pot this autumn!

Ingredients prepared for Instant Pot Vegan Tofu & Little Potato Stew.

Big chunks of Creamer potatoes, extra-firm tofu, carrots, peas, celery, onion, and a rich, thick broth makes up this Instant Pot Tofu & Potato Stew. It’s perfect with a big chunk of crusty bread and a smear of vegan butter.

Cooking tofu in an Instant Pot.

The steps for making this Instant Pot Tofu & Little Potato Stew are simple. Set your Instant Pot to “Saute” and cook cubed tofu in olive oil until crispy on all sides. Stir in some soy sauce to flavour the tofu. Add the vegetables, minus the potatoes, and cook for 5 minutes. Add some flour to thicken the broth, mix and cook for about 1 minute. Add the Fingerling potatoes, broth, water, tomato paste, dried thyme, and black pepper. Set your Instant Pot to “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” and set the time for 15 minutes.

After the Instant Pot depressurizes, change the setting to “Saute”. Add the peas, and cook the stew until it reaches your desired thickness. Taste and adjust the seasoning and you’re done! Serve the Instant Pot Tofu & Potato Stew with some crusty bread or homemade biscuits and enjoy.

Left side: Tofu and vegetables in an Instant Pot. Right: Tofu and vegetables coated with flour in Instant Pot.

Using an Instant Pot, the Little Potatoes cook in 15 minutes and the resulting texture is divine. I noticed a big difference in the texture of the tofu too. It had a meatier, almost chewy texture that made this stew even more satisfying.

Tofu, vegetables, Fingerling potatoes from The Little Potato Company, tomato paste, vegetable broth, and thyme in an Instant Pot.

Don't have an Instant Pot? You’ll need to simmer the stew for about 30 minutes, or until the Fingerlings are tender before adding the peas.

Peas added to Instant Pot Vegan Tofu & Little Potato Stew.

This recipe would be great for bringing leftovers to work or school. It would also make for a delicious base for a biscuit topped pot pie like our Tofu & Potato Pot Pie recipe.

Instant Pot Vegan Tofu & Little Potato Stew after pressure cooking.

You can change up the recipe depending on what ingredients you have on hand. Parsnips and mushrooms would be a delicious addition. Chickpeas or lentils would be great as a substitution for the tofu.

This Instant Pot Tofu & Little Potato Stew is freezer-friendly, so it would be a great meal to heat up for busy nights.

Description

This hearty vegan stew is full of protein-rich tofu, Fingerling potatoes, vegetables and savoury broth. Use the pressure cooking function on your Instant Pot for a complete one-pot meal that’s ready in 1 hour or less. This hearty vegan stew is perfect for chilly autumn nights. Serve with crusty bread slathered with vegan butter or homemade vegan biscuits.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp/45ml olive oil
  • 1 block (350g) extra-firm tofu, cubed
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) soy sauce
  • ½ cup/125ml (100g) chopped yellow onion (1 onion)
  • 1 ½ cups/375ml (200g) chopped carrots (4 carrots)
  • 1 ½ cups (185g) chopped celery (3 ribs celery)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 - 1.5lb bag (680g) of The Little Potato Company’s Fingerling potatoes
  • ½ cup/125ml (75g) unbleached flour
  • 6 cups/1500ml vegetable broth
  • 1 cup/250ml water
  • 3 tbsp/45ml tomato paste
  • 1 pinch dried thyme
  • 1 cup/250ml (140g) frozen peas

Instructions

  1. With the lid off, turn Instant Pot on to “Sauté” and choose the “Normal” heat level. Add the olive oil. Once the Instant Pot is preheated, add the cubed tofu. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the tofu is crisp and golden brown on all sides, about 10 minutes.
  2. Add the soy sauce and stir, cooking until the liquid is absorbed.
  3. Add the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Stir and cook for 2 minutes.
  4. Add the flour and mix well. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring often.
  5. Add the Fingerling potatoes, vegetable broth, water, tomato paste, and thyme. Stir well.
  6. Securely close the lid on your Instant Pot and turn it on to “Manual” or “Pressure Cook”. Set timer for 15 minutes.
  7. Once finished, release the pressure (following Instant Pot instructions) and open the lid when safe to do so.
  8. Add the frozen peas and stir. With the lid off, use the “Sauté” functions set to a heat level of “More” or “High” and reduce the stew to your preferred thickness, about 5 minutes.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning.

Notes

To lower the sodium content, choose an unsalted vegetable broth and season to taste with salt. You can also choose a low-sodium soy sauce.

Have you heard of Beyond Meat? It’s a hugely successful company that makes vegan meats, such as the Beyond Burger!

The Beyond Burger is 100% plant-based and pretty unique. It’s soy-free, gluten-free, and GMO-free. The main ingredients are: water, pea protein, canola oil, and coconut oil. Where will you find it? In the meat aisle, and now, at all A&W locations in Canada.

This is a big deal! This the first time the Beyond Burger is available in Canada. And this is a huge fast food company offering not one, but two plant-based burger patties. Before introducing the Beyond Burger to Canada, A&W had their Deluxe Veggie Burger. The Deluxe Veggie Burger is a typical "veggie patty" made with vegetables and portobello mushrooms. Make it vegan by ordering it without cheese and ranch sauce. Overall, this is a big win for vegans!

So what’s the Beyond Burger like? Today we’re reviewing the Beyond Burger from A&W!

A&W’s Beyond Burger is served on a sesame seed bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard, mayo, and “Uncle sauce”.

A ¼ lb Beyond Burger patty contains 20g of plant protein, 25% of your daily iron intake, 5g of saturated fat, 0mg of cholesterol, and 22g of total fat.

Compared to an 80/20 ¼ lb. beef patty, it’s higher in protein and iron and lower in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Making it Vegan:

Unfortunately, ordering the Beyond Burger as-is isn’t vegan. You’ll need to order it without mayo or “Uncle sauce”. Thankfully, customization is a breeze at A&W and ordering it vegan is super easy.

I also want to note that the Beyond Burger is cooked on the same grill the meat patties are cooked. I'd prefer if A&W could make this switch to cooking the Beyond Burger on it's own grill or section. Unfortunately this I don't think this is realistic right now but in the future, with enough sales and conversation around the topic, I'd love to see this change!

Taste & Texture:

This burger is really good. It’s meaty and satisfying. It doesn’t taste like a veggie patty or vegetables, it tastes meaty but with a different texture than meat. The texture is lighter and a little flaky. The patty is seasoned with A&W’s signature seasoning giving it a distinct A&W-ish flavour. It’s a burger that’s craveable, something I’d look forward to eating. When you’re busy or travelling it can be difficult to find vegan food that's convenient and delicious. These are usually the times that make veganism feel difficult. This burger definitely changes that. I can see myself making A&W a go-to stop when travelling.

After trying the Beyond Burger twice, we tried adding our own vegan mayo. It's SO good. Adding a little vegan mayo makes the Beyond Burger taste richer and for lack of a better term, “less vegan”. Come on A&W, bring on the vegan mayo!

The Price:

The Beyond Burger is $6.99 or $10.98 for a combo (with fries and a drink.) I find this a little expensive for fast food. In comparison, the Mama Burger (beef patty and similar toppings) is $4.79. The Veggie Deluxe Burger is $6.59.

We didn’t find the Beyond Burger to be very filling. If you’re hungry, you’d want to order a combo. For two people that brings the total up to $21.96 plus tax.

A&W will charge you $1.49 per patty to sub the Beyond Burger patty into any other burger on the menu.

The Verdict:

The Beyond Burger is delicious! We really enjoyed it and would order it again

I’m so happy A&W added the Beyond Burger to it’s lineup. It’s a great vegan fast food option that’s satisfying and delicious. It's a big step up from fries or plain salads.

A&W has set a great example. Hopefully this encourages other fast food restaurants to add vegan options to their menus. It gets frustrating having only a few side dishes to choose from when you do go out for fast food.

The cost of each burger is a little prohibitive. At $6.99 per burger, the price will keep me from ordering the Beyond Burger often. It’s something I’ll view as a treat or an option for really busy days or travel.

We highly suggest giving the Beyond Burger a try.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on this addition to A&W’s lineup! Have you tried it? What did you think? Are you vegan? Would you give this burger a try?

Toast doesn't have to be a boring breakfast staple! Play with your food and make this tic-tac-toe toast! We made these cute sweet and savoury tic-tac-toe toast for Nature's Path Organic's Envirokidz.

Make sweet tic-tac-toe toast with natural peanut butter, Envirokidz Koala Crisp Cereal, banana "X's" and strawberry "O's". The savoury version uses hummus, carrot strips for the board, cucumber "O's" and red bell pepper "X's".

Play around with the ingredients and use your favourite fruits, vegetables, and spreads to suit your preferences. We used alphabet cutters to make the "X" and "O" playing pieces. (Except for the strawberries, we sliced them into rounds and used a straw to cut out the centers.)

If you don't have alphabet cookie cutters, use different coloured fruits and vegetables to differentiate between players!
